Statement on Michael Jordan’s Gift to the Ounce of Prevention Fund

by Diana Rauner, president

We are proud to receive this generous gift from Michael Jordan. He is a legend in Chicago and beyond not just for his prowess on the basketball court, but also for his commitment to giving back. We applaud him for using his recent settlement to improve the lives of youth in Chicago.

Like Mr. Jordan, we at the Ounce believe that young children are the future of Chicago and our country. They must be nurtured and inspired from the very start with quality early experiences and positive relationships. They all deserve to achieve their potential and reach their dreams, whether that is to be a teacher, a firefighter, a lawyer or even an NBA star.

We are pleased to be selected alongside so many outstanding Chicago organizations making an impact on our community, especially several we partner with to ensure all children have access to quality early learning.

Research proves that expanding access to high-quality early childhood education programs helps to prevent achievement gaps before they start. With quality early learning, at-risk children are more likely to grow into accomplished students, successful workers and engaged citizens. We at the Ounce see first-hand what investments in quality early childhood programs can do to help set low-income children on a path to success, helping break the cycle of poverty.

With this gift, we can impact even more children and families, and we are deeply grateful to Michael Jordan for his support.
