Alignment Implementation Guides

Alignment between early childhood programs and K–12 schools is complex work. It requires evidence-based, high-quality experiences and supports for students and their families, and trusting relationships and communication, and it should be structured so that each experience has a cumulative effect—ideally, each coherently contributes to the next by sustaining and building on the developmental progress and learning that comes before.

After three years of initial efforts, the Birth-to-College Collaborative synthesized our learning into a series of alignment implementation guides aimed at program and school leaders, and teachers and family support staff.

The alignment guides are sequenced and informed by the framework and stages of implementation of evidence-based practices identified by the National Implementation Research Network:

  • Exploration and Adoption (determining readiness)
  • Installation (securing resources and preparing staff)
  • Initial Implementation (using new skills and supporting new ways to work)
  • Full Implementation
  • Sustainability and Scale-Up

The guides do not yet share insights on the subsequent stages of full implementation, sustainability and scale-up, as we consider our own experience thus far reflective only of initial implementation.

Each guide begins with a primary question and the corresponding rationale. In addition, guidance for getting started and next steps is offered, building on the work and experiences and providing applied examples from the Birth-to-College Collaborative. Where applicable, policy implications and recommendations are discussed.  Each guide is accompanied by a printable action plan, meant for those undertaking alignment to use in meetings with staff to guide key decisions and formulate next steps.
